The Future of the Clergy in the Post-Islamic Republic Era<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The future of the clergy in Iran is closely linked to the “state of religiosity” within society. The different “sects within the clergy” do not fit into a uniform category within the context of social transformations. Moreover, the “influencing parameters of the era” also play a significant role in shaping the future status of the clergy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. “The State of Religiosity in Society”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A. In the realm of “Sharia-Theology”:<\/strong> Although, in tandem with the 1979 Revolution, the clergy gained a prominent position, the rise of virtual networks has now made theological discourse not limited to the pulpit but also accessible through digital platforms, offering broader reach for the public. The theological apparatus of the clergy has fractured, and as a result, the Sharia-legal system it once upheld has come into question. In the events of the “Women-Life-Freedom” movement of 2022, one of the most symbolic aspects of the clerical legal system, namely the Islamic veil, was challenged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of religiosity, Iranian society can be categorized into the following groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Religious Fundamentalists<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Devout Traditionalists<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Ashamed Traditionalists<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    The first group comprises various age demographics. The majority of individuals in the second, third, and sixth categories are over 50 years old, while most of the youth fall into the fourth and fifth categories. The younger Iranian generation has become “globalized” and now concerns itself more with “life” than with religious adherence or opposition to it. They are either indifferent or adhere to a personal form of religiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It seems that in the future, society will move towards a “personal interpretation of religion” and “selective religiosity.” Therefore, the future of religiosity in society will be far more fluid than what can be encapsulated within the limited structure of the clergy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    B. In the social-political domain:<\/strong> Historically, the clergy has either been allied with the marginalized or has acted as an intermediary between the elites and the masses. During the 1979 Revolution, the clergy became a socially accepted reference by supporting the marginalized. However, after aligning with power, it transformed into an oligarchic class, becoming part of the conflict between the elites and the marginalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The clergy\u2019s silence during the protests against price hikes in December 2017, as well as in November 2019 and during the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, demonstrated that the clergy, having tasted wealth and power, could no longer stand with the marginalized at crucial moments in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the post-Islamic Republic era, the clergy will once again retreat into isolation, and its return as a social-political reference in the “mid-term future” will not be feasible. The cessation of government funding and the decline in religious donations will force the clergy to reevaluate its financial structure. In a manner similar to the clergy of Christianity, it may be compelled to sell invested assets to sustain its daily expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. “The Different Sects within the Clergy”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A brief examination reveals that the position of the “traditional” clergy differs significantly from that of the “reformists” and “government-affiliated clerics,” and therefore, their futures will also be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Although, currently, angry citizens do not distinguish between different factions of the clergy and perceive all clerics under the same veil, after a period of crisis, when the clergy returns to its position in mosques and pulpits, the traditional clergy will not witness fundamental change. Reformists may express their progressive views with more freedom, but undoubtedly, the greatest transformations will occur within the ranks of the government-affiliated clerics who support the Islamic Republic, and they will witness the end of their era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. “Influencing Parameters of the Clergy\u2019s Future”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In addition to the state of religiosity, the following parameters will play a significant role in shaping the “mid-term future of the clergy,” although their impact will diminish in the “long-term future of the clergy”:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A. The timeline of the collapse of the Islamic Republic<\/strong>
    B. A soft collapse and gradual transformation, or a violent and bloody downfall<\/strong>
    C. The clergy\u2019s stance in the final moments of the Islamic Republic<\/strong>
    D. The potential replacement or alternative to the Islamic Republic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The clergy, in parallel with its alliance with political power, lost its “social capital” built on historical solidarity with the masses. The only way to recover this capital is for the clergy to return to its historical role as a spiritual guide.
