Leila Gharavi is currently a doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, specialising in Computational Social Science (CSS) within the doctoral program, Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences. She began her professional career as a telecommunications engineer, accumulating a decade of research experience at Nokia. Over time, her professional focus shifted toward sociology and social issues, initially through roles in sports management and inclusion in sports, followed by work in social entrepreneurship. This multidisciplinary journey ultimately led her to integrate her technical expertise with her interest in sustainable human behaviour, now explored through the lens of CSS and data analysis.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Adopting Practical, Engineering Approaches to Problem-Solving in Bridging Sociopolitical Differences: A Proposal<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout their evolution, engineering disciplines and social sciences have upheld contrasting views on the concept of differences in their respective fields. Whereas engineering disciplines view differences as opportunities and actively utilise differentials \u2013 be it in pressure, voltage, or temperature \u2013 to drive innovation and progress, the social sciences tend to treat sociopolitical differences primarily as negative and as sources of conflict rather than opportunity. This paper applies the engineering logic to the social domain, advocating for a shift in perspective: rather than seeing social differentials as inherently divisive, they could be recognised as potential drivers of transformation when managed effectively. To support this argument, the paper employs analogical reasoning, a key cognitive tool that transfers insights from a well-understood source domain to a more complex or abstract target domain. Equipped with this method, the paper introduces \u201ccircuit analogy,\u201d in which society\u2019s components and their dynamics, symbolically called social nodes with social voltages, social appliances and social flows, are likened to the components of an electric circuit. Just as in basic electric circuit a suitable lamp or appliance enables a potential electric current, driven by voltage differentials, to flow and  transform to light, an appropriate social appliance connected between two social nodes with different social voltages, could achieve a similar social feat. To demonstrate the versatility of explanations by the proposed analogy, the paper applies it to the dynamics of the current sociopolitical landscape of Iran.
