Nadereh Chamlou is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council\u2019s empowerME initiative and an international development advisor. Previously, she was a senior advisor at the World Bank, where over a 30+ years career, she held managerial, technical, coordination, and advisory positions in such fields as economic management, corporate governance, private sector development, financial markets, environment, infrastructure, and gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work has focused on private sector and entrepreneurship development, particularly on issues related to promoting growth and competitiveness through better utilization of the talent pool and benefiting from diversity and inclusion. She co-authored the World Bank flagship report on \u201cCorporate Governance: A Framework for Implementation,<\/em>\u201d which led to the founding of the World Bank\/OECD-sponsored Global Corporate Governance Forum; and, headed its Secretariat from 1998-2000. Other publications include \u201cGender and Development in the MENA Region \u2013 Women in the Public Sphere<\/em>\u201d; \u201cThe Environment for Women\u2019s Entrepreneurship in the MENA Region<\/em>\u201c; and \u201cWomen, Work, Welfare in the MENA Region<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, she served as an Adjunct Professor at New York University\u2019s Wagner School for Public Policy, as a Member of the scientific committee of the Dutch Gender Task Force (2009), and was the Founding Member of the World Bank-sponsored Gender Economic Research and Policy Analysis (GERPA) for the MENA Region and a member of its Steering and Advisory Committees (2006-2013).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Corruption and its impacts on Iran\u2019s Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Economic growth.  Corruption distorts the allocation of resources. Bribes or diversion of funds are the monetary channels that reduce efficiency; nepotism, wastage of talents, time, and opportunities are non-monetary means through which corruption impacts productivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Investment Climate: The prevalence of corruption increases costs to businesses, and discourages domestic and foreign investors, which results in slower job creation and employment opportunities for average citizens. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Inequality. Corruption causes unequal access and unfair treatment.  It allows a small circle of insiders to bypass normal processes and enrich themselves while others must endure disadvantages and shortages. The preferential treatment of some versus others leads to widening income inequality.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Public trust and social cohesion.  Corrupt practices undermine the provision of public services and are likely to cause dissatisfaction and protests, which erode the political stability of the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
