Sadeq Bigdeli is a Barrister & Solicitor in Ontario, Canada, and an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His law firm is one of the fastest-growing firms serving new immigrants in Canada. Previously, he held full-time academic positions in New Zealand (Senior Lecturer, 2010-2017) and Iran (SBU National Law School, 2016-2020) and has taught at universities worldwide. He played a key role in negotiating Iran\u2019s Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), including Russia, reactivating Iran\u2019s stalled accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and drafting the country\u2019s first trade remedies regulations. Capitalizing on his practical and academic expertise, he led a national research project to redefine Iran\u2019s trade policy based on transparency and trade liberalization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this work, he sought to drive meaningful change in Iran by fostering global integration. However, he came to the conclusion that the regime\u2019s ideological foundation itself is the root cause of the country\u2019s problems. This realization has shaped his advocacy as a human rights lawyer and a proponent of liberty for Iran. Recognizing the impossibility of reform within Iran\u2019s ideologically driven regime, Dr. Bigdeli resigned from his role as a trade negotiator. He then took a position at SBU Law School, Iran\u2019s top-ranked law faculty, where he remained until 2020, when his contract was unexpectedly not renewed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attributing this to his critical stance on the Iranian regime and the IRGC, and his refusal to attend mandatory ideological workshops required to extend faculty contracts, he shifted his focus entirely to advocacy and legal practice. Dr. Bigdeli holds an MA and Ph.D. in Law from the University of Bern and an LLM (\u201909) from Harvard Law School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has co-edited two books with Cambridge University Press (2009) and Edward Elgar (2017) and has published extensively in academic journals and book chapters. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Georgetown Law School (2011) and a Lecturer at Harvard\u2019s Institute for Global Law & Policy in Doha (2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019expertise du Dr Bigdeli couvre le droit du commerce international et des affaires, le droit de l\u2019immigration, le droit administratif et la philosophie du droit. En 2014, alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait professeur de droit en Nouvelle-Z\u00e9lande, au moment des n\u00e9gociations sur l\u2019accord nucl\u00e9aire iranien, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 par l\u2019Organisation iranienne de la promotion du commerce \u00e0 contribuer \u00e0 la r\u00e9int\u00e9gration du pays dans l\u2019\u00e9conomie mondiale. Il a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans la n\u00e9gociation de l\u2019accord de libre-\u00e9change (ALE) entre l\u2019Iran et l\u2019Union \u00e9conomique eurasienne (UEEA), incluant la Russie, la relance de l\u2019adh\u00e9sion de l\u2019Iran \u00e0 l\u2019Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC), ainsi que la r\u00e9daction des premi\u00e8res r\u00e9glementations iraniennes en mati\u00e8re de recours commerciaux. S\u2019appuyant sur son expertise pratique et acad\u00e9mique, il a dirig\u00e9 un projet de recherche national visant \u00e0 red\u00e9finir la politique commerciale de l\u2019Iran en mettant l\u2019accent sur la transparence et la lib\u00e9ralisation du commerce.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Par ce travail, il a cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 apporter un changement significatif en Iran en favorisant son int\u00e9gration dans l\u2019\u00e9conomie mondiale. Cependant, il est arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 la conclusion que l\u2019id\u00e9ologie m\u00eame du r\u00e9gime est la cause fondamentale des probl\u00e8mes du pays. Cette prise de conscience a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 son engagement en tant qu\u2019avocat des droits humains et d\u00e9fenseur de la libert\u00e9 en Iran.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constatant l\u2019impossibilit\u00e9 d\u2019une r\u00e9forme sous un r\u00e9gime id\u00e9ologiquement rigide, le Dr Bigdeli a d\u00e9missionn\u00e9 de son poste de n\u00e9gociateur commercial. Il a ensuite pris un poste \u00e0 la Facult\u00e9 de droit de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 SBU, la plus prestigieuse d\u2019Iran, o\u00f9 il est rest\u00e9 jusqu\u2019en 2020, lorsqu\u2019il a appris que son contrat ne serait pas renouvel\u00e9. Il attribue cette d\u00e9cision \u00e0 ses critiques envers le r\u00e9gime iranien et les GRI, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 son refus d\u2019assister aux ateliers id\u00e9ologiques obligatoires n\u00e9cessaires au renouvellement des contrats des enseignants. \u00c0 partir de ce moment, il s\u2019est enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 sa carri\u00e8re d\u2019avocat et \u00e0 son engagement pour les droits humains.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
